Let the Games Begin!!
The Greeks loved sports and the Olympic Games was the biggest sporting event on the calendar. The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest Greece and every 4 years around 50,000 people came from all over Greece to watch and take part in the Olympic Games. The games were a religious festival held in honor of Zeus, the King of Gods.
Women at the Olympics
If married women were caught sneaking they would be thrown off the side of a mountain as punishment. The only people who were able to go to the Olympic Games were unmarried girls, boys, and men. Truly the only women who were interested in sports were really only the Spartan women. But there is a story of a woman who was so keen to see her son compete that she broke the no-women rule and went to the Olympics disguised as a man.
